Week 3-Thing 7

I should probably already know this, but I would like some information from someone who knows for sure what are the implications of using book cover images. Would it be a violation of copyright to use a book cover on a poster in the library, on a website, in a newsletter? I suspect it is, but it would be good to have that confirmed.

How about getting permission from the publisher of the book? Are publishers likely to be generous with the use of book cover art or not? Do they respond in a timely manner, generally speaking? What has been your experience?

If you are using them in your library it would certainly fall within Fair Use guidelines. However, if you were to post them on a blog it gets a bit edgier. Certainly you are not doing it for profit and it, in fact, is free publicity for the publisher. I would think that even if they objected to it, the worst case scenario is that they would ask you to remove the pictures.

It will be interesting to see how the internet changes the use of book cover art amonst other things. I was in the local library today and noticed they have a movie poster of the new Nancy Drew movie displayed. I thought it was a neat way to encourage kids to read Nancy Drew but I wondered if the movie makers 1)knew about this use of their material and 2) thought of it as advertising or infringment.
